What’s in a Food Blog?

It seems like everyone is talking about food these days. If we’re not talking about it, we’re cooking it, photographing it, sharing it, eating it and…writing about it. But why?

Is it because the Internet has opened up the opportunity to view recipes from around the world, or even right next door? I think so.

Is it because Television has tantalized us with personalities and eye candy? Yes, indeed.

Is it because people are finding fame in movie and book deals based on their food adventures? Yep.

Why do I do it? What is this blog about? Well, let me see.

First of all, food is something we need to survive. Food history, industry and complex nature is intricate and far reaching. It is fascinating to me, and continues to teach me things about myself, the world, my faith.

I’ve sought food for it’s healing properties during cold and flu season, to test effects on my son’s Alopecia, to detoxify, to energize, to relax, to put meat on my bean pole daughter’s bones, to take meat off of my expanding waistline.

Food is more than just a means of survival though. It can bring people together, it can remind us to be intentional, authentic, in the moment, adventurous.

It can remind us not to be stereotypical, judgemental, shy, fearful.

Food is powerful. In a quiet way. It does not boast. It waits to be discovered, like a wallflower. It doesn’t jump up and down to reveal its mysteries.

Food is challenging. The ways in which it can be manipulated are vast: heating, freezing, slicing, saucing, browning, slow roasting, braising, frying. Its compliments never-ending: Beef and Nutmeg, Chocolate and Beets, Sweet Potatoes and Black Truffle Oil.

And it’s because of its complex nature, intricate appeal, compounding properties, quiet power and challenging features, that I write this blog. Food transcends beyond my kitchen to my garden, my table, my relationships, my sense of duty, my faith, my service.

So while there are a myriad of food blogs out there, this one can be a sort of jumping off point of inspiration, a place to be dazzled by food’s teachings, interesting facts, historical properties, beyond the recipes and photographs.
